In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, Emmanuel, a young Haitian schoolteacher, relocates his family to the Dominican Republic in search of a better life. Unable to find work as a teacher, he takes a job as a janitor at Hotel Paraíso, a popular beachfront resort frequented by American tourists. When his wages prove insufficient to support his family, Emmanuel realizes that his only viable option is to enter the underground criminal world.

He is recruited by a local drug trafficker notorious for exploiting undocumented Haitians, who quickly takes advantage of Emmanuel's desperation by forcing him to distribute drugs to wealthy guests staying at the hotel. Although the business is initially lucrative, his life spirals out of control when he is accused of murdering a prominent hotel guest, forcing him to flee the country and leave his loved ones behind.

Once an optimistic family man, Emmanuel learns that survival requires adapting to his new reality in the Dominican Republic—even if it means embracing a morally compromised way of life.

Incapaz de encontrar trabajo como maestro, Emmanuel asume una posición de limpieza en “Hotel Paraíso”, un punto de veraneo popular con turistas americanos. Cuando sus ganancias no son suficientes para mantener a su familia, se da cuenta de que su única avenida viable es entrar al mundo criminal clandestino.

 

Emmanuel es contratado por un traficante de drogas local, conocido por explotar haitianos indocumentados, que inmediatamente se aprovecha de su desesperación y le hace distribuir drogas a los turistas ricos que se alojan en el hotel.

 

Aunque el negocio es lucrativo al principio, su mundo comienza a descontrolarse cuando lo acusan de matar a una importante huésped del hotel, obligándolo a huir del país y abandonar a sus seres queridos. Emmanuel, una vez un hombre de familia optimista, aprende que para sobrevivir tiene que adaptarse a su nuevo ambiente en la República Dominicana, aunque su estilo de vida sea moralmente cuestionable.
